I appear to have forgot to watch that "A Year in the life of JKR" documentary. I totally thought I had. It was on TV earlier and I sat down to watch it and I realise I totally hadn't. Good thing I didn't miss it now. A great documentary I have to say. ♥ JKR.

Here's a meme, supplied by [livejournal.com profile] shocolate.

This is called the "alternative life meme" and basically you have to fill out the questions with fictional characters that come to your mind. Pick a different person for each answer. No repetitions!

When my flist exploded this weekend in reactions to that finale of Doctor Who, I just reclined in my metaphorical recliner and watched the commotion. I didn't feel envy or anything over not being a part of such a far reaching fannish happening.

I'm seeing posts here and there about people getting ready to go to Portus. I do hope they have fun, as much fun as I had at the only con I've been to. But I'm not burning to go like I've been over most cons.

Maybe I have reached some kind of a fandon zen so to speak which I find hilarious because once I just had to know everything - I had to know who this or that was and I had to be on top of every fandom rumour. Now I let one of my best friends and the person with whom I "grew up with" in online fandom, run wild in fandoms I've no intention in entering because I don't care for the source material. I remember agonising over the fact she might be into the CSI fandom at one point and I was fretting over all the seasons I would have to watch. (BTW, why do American TV series have to have so many episodes per seasons? Or am I just being lazy?)

I've been on the look-out for a new fandom for a long while - not because I don't like the Harry Potter fandom anymore, it's just I'm allowing myself to be really picky. That's proved to be a luxury for me - not worrying about this or that fest and not feeling like I'm missing the boat when I'm not regularly reading fic. As for a new fandom, I haven't found anything I've wanted pursue further than to examine the source.

Now you might ask, dear reader, why do I don't face that fact that I'm fed up with fandom. The answer would be that I don't think I am, I'm just enjoying it differently. I find myself in the role of the onlooker - a very aware onlooker who knows how it feels - every squee and every woe. And since I put myself into that metaphorical recliner in the beginning of the entry, I might add another metaphor. If fandom was a swimming pool, I'm lounging poolside, occasionally dipping my toes in but I haven't been submerged for quite some time now and I'm just fine with that 'cause I'm still friends with so many I've met through fandom despite the fact fandom-wise we have gone our separate ways lone time ago. And I think that's what matters to me.

Found this link on [livejournal.com profile] ohnotheydidnt.

Top Ten Celebrities and top ten fictional men women fantasize about.

While I find Frank Lampard very unattractive, I can see what people see in him.

But warming 7th place on the list for fictional men is a Harry Potter character. I think most of the fandom will go WTF over that one. That's all I can say.

Just click the link and see.

It's very fitting to finish off a lazy weekend with a bunch of memes (even one that I've done before).

I think I've been watching Rome too much or something but I suddenly thought of something that I haven't seen addressed in the Harry Potter fandom much.

We often ponder who will die, from the "good guys" side and the "bad guys" side. We also know that amongst the "bad guys", there are people who don't hesitate in murdering and torturing others.

I do think that the "good guys" do have their shades of grey, perhaps best illustrated with Harry himself as he has attempted to used the Cruciatus Curse more than once.

So who of the "good guys" (the younger fraction in particular) would be capable of killing someone? And here I'm not talking about Harry having to kill Voldemort but him killing someone else. Snape perhaps or Peter Pettigrew. Would JKR write something like that in her last book in the series? Will the war develop in that direction?

I did made a poll to see what you think. I didn't put all of the "good guys" there so make use of the comments if you can think of something I didn't (which is very likely). Also I don't think it's necessary to answer that you think Harry will kill Voldemort but if you want, you can put that down.

I wrote a long and boring entry about why I'm just not that into the Harry Potter films. Then I realised that no one would be interested. So all I'll say about my new GoF DVD is "Yay! Extended scene with the Weird Sisters! I ♥ Jarvis Cocker!"

When did songfic become uncool in fandom (the Harry Potter fandom specifically)? Back in the day when I was a fresh-faced newbie, songfics were not looked down upon or at least, it didn't look like that to me. Then one day I started seeing derisive comments about songfics and how terrible they were though rarely people gave specific reasons.

I do remember once reading about how to write a songfic successfully and how you should not just repeat the sentiments the lyrics were expressing but simply use them to support what you were trying to convey in the fic. Which to me seems reasonable and I have enjoyed fics that I've felt that did that.

It also appears to me that fics that quote lyrics at the beginning (of a chapter if it's a chapter fic), are usually not considered songsfic though the purpose of placing lyrics at the beginning appears to be the same as described here above.

What do you think? Have songfics always been uncool and I was simply out of the loop or did this change and when did it change? (If so, I have the feeling I need to blame Evanescence).

So there have been discussions about JKR's handling of the romance in HBP. While I was extremely satisfied with how everything turned out, I'm fully aware that there are lots of people who aren't. I saw a discussion where it was mentioned that a lot of people had been longing for character-driven romance when JKR delivered plot-driven romance. That remark reminded me of something that I said about H/G at some point. With the help of the search option of gmail, I found what I said and where I said it.

I seem to need to sleep unnaturally much. I slept eight hours but all I want to do now, is to crawl back to bed.

The lovely [livejournal.com profile] dianora asked for our top six fandom moments (I presume so far). The following is in no particular order.

- Geekmoot (see here and here). A big bunch of lovely and geeky people who understood and adventures in book reading.

- Reading Hermione's 4th Year and with that finding someone who seemed to read the books the way I did. Then consequently finding the SQ.

- Being asked by my co-worker what it was I was reading on the computer and obviously enjoying so much. A short conversation followed explaining fanfiction and asking her if she'd read Harry Potter. The rest is history. (Co-worker in question would be a certain [livejournal.com profile] misspince).

- Standing in line for six hours to buy tickets for an early screening of TTT and then the day of the early screening.

- Posting my first fic on the SQ (At the Eve of Things) and my first reviews coming from three of my favourite authors, [livejournal.com profile] poppy_p, Medusa and Penpusher.

- Starting my own fic archive, ERISED, with [livejournal.com profile] misspince and [livejournal.com profile] michelle_ravel. (Even though the poor thing is a little bit abandoned at the moment).

- Having the lovely [livejournal.com profile] queenriley come to visit me and [livejournal.com profile] misspince.

And today is the birthday of one of the wonderful Geekmooters. The most brilliant and wonderful [livejournal.com profile] mrsronweasley.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, LIZ!

I've been wanting to write down some predictions for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince but there's one problem I've encountered. As we come closer to the end, there are things that need to be resolved and some of them will start to come to pass in HBP. It can prove problematic trying to figure out what they are.

So I figured if I did the predictions and theorizing in parts, then I might have chance to get something out there.

A cut for those who are avoiding speculations and such )
