misspince and I got into a huge discussion about Lord of the Rings and the Icelandic sagas. And Miss Pince was talking about that even though the Rohirrim are as Icelandic as they come, Tolkien must have found their fascination for horses in another source then the Icelandic sagas. That launced me into a lecture about Hrafnkels saga where a horse named Freyfaxi is vital to the storyline. Which lead us to talk about Shadowfax and we started wondering if English speaking folk just thought that Shadowfax just was a very technologically advanced horse :p We are pretty sure that Tolkien was thinking in Icelandic when he named Shadowfax.
We released our inner geeks and looked up in dictionaries for the meaning of the word fax in English and we also crossreferenced in a Swedish and a Danish dictionary.
We are inclined to believe that most of you don't know what Shadowfax's name means. Do you?
Sorry if any of you have already mentioned it. But I squealed loudly when Aragorn told Éowyn that he was 87 years old. And after checking it in the Appendices, we discoved it is probably canon. Oh the wonders of 87.
