Those fanfics opening lines from last night ... right.

1. Molly Weasley walked briskly past the tree and flower-bush lined pathways towards St. Mungo's, clutching Ginny's hand tightly and checking over her shoulder every so often to make sure that Ron was still trailing behind them.

This is Madhuri's Of Inoculations and Insanity. A funny little fic about the Weasleys written by someone who has a good eye for human behaviour.

2. Bowing his head in acquiescence to Dumbledore's instructions, Severus had turned and left the room, not sparing a glance for Harry, Mrs. Weasley, or any of the others present.

This is kwinelf's The Greatest Love, the Highest Sacrifice. I've been hooked since the first chapter was posted. A true evidence that ideas don't need become clichés though you've seen them before. A good and inventive author can make any old idea seem new. (And it's one of the few D/G stories on the 'Quill)

3. There was fire all around him.

This is of course Thing1's The Casting Stone. True example of what happens when good characterization goes in hand with a tight, action-packed plot. Pure Genius :)

4. The rain was hammering rhythmically against the thin glass of the slightly dirty window.

This is Carrie's My Last Story. Carrie is excellent with emotions. She can make you burst into tears with just few words but she's never sappy, far from it. My Last Story isn't very long but boy, did I cry.

5. And again, the same dream: death and blood and terror

This is just the opening line of the second installment of the fandom's most famous trilogy. Yes, this is how Draco Sinister by Cassandra Claire starts. The reason why I picked Draco Sinister even though the writing in Draco Veritas is superior, is that I have decide I won't form an opinion on DV until it is completed. I feel it's the sort of story that one must judge as a whole. Besides DS has loads of swords and beasts and founders (and leather trousers :D).

6. "Syzygy," Peter said, reading aloud from the dictionary.

This one is easy if you know of the story, that is. This is Alex Malfoy's Syzygy. A strange MWPP tale that really demonstrates Alex's prowess as a writer and it also has a wonderful original streak in it.

7. She'd been pacing for over an hour now.

This is Irina's Seekers. I'm a big fan of her Pendragon series but I do love her short pieces too. The reason why I love this short piece so much is that it deal with one of the arguments against H/G, the hero-worship. Irina does that with such grace.

8. Harry hadn't looked at all well, at lunch time, and thoughts of what might be bothering him were greatly bothering Hermione now.

Arabella's Not as a Last Resort. Utter perfection. One of my feel good reads.

9. Hermione looked up wearily as the door of her study opened carefully.

Penpusher's A Most Ingenious Paradox. The beginning of an awesome triology. An unsung gem really. Should be up there with the so-called überfics.

10. "What time is it now?" asked Mandy Brocklehurst chewing furiously on one fingernail.

Poppy's Padma's Quest. Nice, fluffy and brimful of cute teen angst. And reminds one that minor characters also have lives.

Like I said last night ... I drew randomly from the pool of my favourites stories. For instance I just realized that I hadn't mentioned a single one of my favourite slash stories ... perhaps that's another entry :D

Siriusly ... this is very hard to pick stories out. But I just like to mention that I would have wanted to include one story there. Under a Dark Star by Medusa. Unfortunately it looks like she has pulled her story of the net for it can no longer be found at the Quill nor at the Weird Sisters list. I hope it means that she's doing something serious with her original writing.
