So it was either writing speculations about the title of book nr. six of Harry Potter or post a huge load of quiz results. The speculations won.
While I haven't formed any solid opinion as to what the Half Blood Prince stands for, I've been toying with some ideas. I did mentioned this briefly in a comment on
ashavah's LJ.
First thing first, I'm actually quite sceptical that the "Prince" part is in reference to royalty. My instincts tell me that "Prince" is metaphorical. (I can't rule out that my cultural background influences might have something to do with this for the Icelandic nation has never had royalty of its own).
My idea is that the "Half Blood Prince" isn't an identified person. While I'm vary to bring up the topic of prophecies (still, the prophecy about Harry and Voldemort in OotP is just too vague to satisfy me completely), it might refer to a legend or a myth. Some of the other titles are precedents for that. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone had an actual legendary object as a crucial part of the plot. Harry Potter and the Camber of Secrets referred to that legendary lair of Slytherin's Monster and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is about an object tied in with centuries of wizarding tradition, The Triwizard Tournament. Also, while I don't have any actual evidence, it wouldn't surprise me that the concept of the Order of the Phoenix had ages of history behind it.
This could tie in with the ideas about the "Half Blood Prince" being either Godric Gryffindor or Salazar Slytherin. Or Tom Riddle. Or someone else. But my main idea is that the title doesn't directly refer to an actual identified person.
