I went with [livejournal.com profile] misspince last night and saw Cold Mountain. Those were three hours well spent.

I'm not sure what over-all comment would fit for the movie. It's beautiful and heartbreaking. But like the two other Anthony Minghella movies I've seen (The English Patient and The Talented Mr. Ripley), its strongest point is that it has you thinking for quite some time.

Renée Zellweger managed to redeem herself in my eyes which was quite a feat since I used to be hardly able to stand her. Other actors and actresses were indeed good. Jude Law was well worthy of his Oscar nomination and so on. The only problem I had was the fact I see to have overdosed on QaF UK and all the time Charlie Hunnam (the creepy-looking albino for those who don't know him) was onscreen, I kept thinking: "No, Nathan. You are not supposed to be a nasty, albino kid. You are supposed to be a pretty gay boy. Please go back to Canal Street, find some nice boy to shag and stop scaring me." I wonder if it will be that way when I see this movie, will I just wait for Charlie and Elijah to shag the whole time?

I digress.

Miss Pince and I did agree the lovemaking scene (between Jude and Nicole) was beautiful and so very intimate. One of the shots did remind me of this painting. (Warning: this painting, while 138 years old, still shocks people). I can imagine that the cinematographer had it in mind. And god damn, Jude Law has a gorgeous orgasm face (it wasn't a surprise to me though, I've seen Wilde :D).

Yeah, Cold Mountain was great even though it should carry a tissue warning.

So I picked up yet another Stephanie Laurens book to read. Not sure why because the cute gay cops from FAKE managed to cheer me up well enough after all the depressing Japanese short stories I've been reading. This time it was The Lady Chosen. Now I haven't read more than the prologue and the first chapter but I already found one crucial fault with the book. See, the prologue is about these seven guys who have been spies for England during the Napoleon wars. Now the wars are over and they have been released from duty to return back to England. Each and everyone of them comes home to a title and a fortune and the prospect of having to find a wife. Or rather being haunted by matchmakers during the Season. So they form a club and buy a house for a safe haven. Okay, the flaw here? Seven hot ex-spies turned aristocrats? They should get it on with each other. *nods*

P.S. New icon. Animated by Miss Pince. Also see the Remus!Viggo icon here, she made that too. *loves Miss Pince very much*
