You know, usually my routine is to read my friendslist before I make a post but this time it's different ...
As you might have guessed, I was just returning from a viewing of Return of the King.
I don't think I have a word in my vocabulary in the several languages I possess some vocabulary in, to describe this film. I'm not even sure how I made it home. I might have been carried by eagles or something.
Also I don't know where even to start. Perhaps with the scene with Smégol and Déagol and I don't know what to say about except ... erm ... perfect :)
Then there's where Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli ride to Isengard to find Pippin and Merry all well and jolly. This actually happens to be my favourite scene from the books and I'm beyond ecstatic it was in the film.
Pippin with the palantir ... first time I grabbed the arm of my seat. Merry's and Pippin's exchange before Pippin rides with Gandalf, first heartbreaking scene of many.
Ugh, I don't know what to talk about next. The lighting of the beacons was probably the most visual scene of all in the film ... I got such goosebumps and the sky was perfect. That dark blue with stars ... so painfully beautiful.
And Aragorn's sprint was just ... one of those moments that speaks volumes about the character.
One of the things that Miss Pince said to me in the intermission (Icelandic movie theaters usually have intermissions) was: "Pippin sings!" And I totally got what she meant. God, Billy Boyd was so good. Damn, he's really an actor.
And Figwit lives :D You know what I mean, when Arwen rides back to Rivendell, he's the one who inquires where "Lady Arwen" is going.''
And I haven't even touched on Frodo and Sam. Shelob's Lair ... gave me just the same chill as when I read it.
The abrasions on Frodo's skin from the Ring's chain ... that was such a great touch and it really said so much. (I love understatements ... just wanted you to know).
When the Rohirrim arrive at Pelennor fields and the speech Théoden gives his men ... the first really gut-wrenching moment I had ... and after the films, I've turned into the biggest Théoden fan (I like him in the books but not this much). Perhaps I'm just a Bernard Hill fan :)
Éowyn's big scene was just ... beyond words. And I loved how they showed the Witchking disappear. That was really cool.
The Undead army was cool as well. I really like how they did them.
Legolas and Gimli counted and Legolas on the oliphaunt ... a real Leggy moment! And Gimli: "He just counts as one!" Of course, Gimli, of course.
All the scenes with Frodo and Sam walking up Mount Doom. So heartwrenching. And Sam carrying Frodo ... yeah, there were more than couple of tears that fell.
Aragorn leading them up to the Black Gates. What can I say?
The whole destroying of the Ring. Oh men. And one thing I've got to say. It isn't often that you see fake lava look so real. Maybe it just needs people from volcanic islands to know how make fake lava.
The scene where Frodo wakes up ... one big "Awww" moment. Except where my breath got caught in my throat when Legolas arrived in that blue shirt. :D (What? I am a Legolas fangirl after all).
Aragorn's coronation. Great, great scene. Best part was of course ... "You bow to no one."
The Shire moments were so bittersweet. Love the Sam/Rosie moments. Utterly cute.
The whole leaving for the Grey Havens ... okay, I get teared-up thinking about (just as I get teared-up when I read it).
And the last scene where the door closes after Sam, Rosie and the kids. Perfect ending.
As a whole. The film worked. It so worked even though many scenes from the book were missing. Nevertheless it worked and it was brilliant. The editing was just so perfect. And the film totally had the right tempo ... that intense build-up, the grandiose climax and the wonderful aftermath which just eased it perfectly out. Best picture if I ever saw one :)
Miss Pince just asked when we were watching the credits, "what will we do next December?"
Yeah, what will we do?
