I've been so incredibly lazy these last few days that I haven't even done a happy holiday post, let alone a post to squee about my Yuletide gift.

Well, I probably have to recommend the canon first.

I've been getting into reading M/M romance novels and I've been enjoying quite a few of them. I like stuff with feelings and romance so I keep out of the aggressively kinky stuff but most of the novels I've read, I have enjoyed.

The one that stuck with me the most, I ended up requesting for Yuletide because I simply just wanted more of the main characters who were so lovely.

It's kinky as it's about a D/s relationship but it does a nice twist on what one has gotten used to with that kink and other BDSM related stuff. There's an age disparity but the Dom is younger and inexperienced. And really, from the outside, this pair doesn't look well matched at all. but that's what makes this such an interesting story. I totally fell in love with the main characters.

So I highly recommend For Real by Alexis Hall.

Then go read the fic I got for Yuletide this year.

I picked up Supernatural: Heart of the Dragon by Keith B.A. DeCandido the other day. I'm fascinated by tie-in novels; are they canon or just paid-for and sanctioned fanfics?

It's not my intention to answer that question today but I want to do a review of this book.

1. (Answer is The Queen and I by Sue Townsend)
* The Queen was in bed watching television with Harris.
* He counted them under his breath.
* She and Margaret and Crawfie had once travelled from Piccadilly Circus to Tottenham Court Road, changing at Leicester Square.
* He leapt up toward the parcel which was tucked under the Queen's arm.
* All that could be seen were Harris's sharp teeth and his red, liver-coloured tongue.

2. (Answer is Star Trek XI novelization by Alan Dean Foster)
* The star was a supergiant and very old.
* "Yes, I could see that."
* " ...If they are linked, let's hope the phenomenon is a transitory one."
* It was not he who was unstable but the ground underfoot.
* For the life of them, as it sped outsystem and entered warp space, no one on the Enterprise could figure out where the beagle with the very peculiar ears had come from

3. (Answer is The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger)
* If you really want to hear about it, the first thing you'll probably want to know is where I was born, and what my lousy childhood was like, and how my parents were occupied and all before they had me, and all that David Copperfield kind of crap, but I don't feel like going into it, if you want to know the truth.
* "...All right?"
* "...But we had to read outside books for extra credit once in a while."
* She had hardly any behind.
* If you do, you start missing everybody.

4. (Answer is Boy Meets Boy by David Levithan)
* 9.00 p.m. on a November Saturday.
* This is how I know she knows I know.
* Before, it was all about hope and anticipation.
* "Why?" I ask.
* And I think to myself, what a wonderful world.

Comments screened since at least one of them is kind of painfully obvious.

Ugh. Work.

Therefore a meme (stolen from [livejournal.com profile] ceilidh:

The Big Read reckons that the average adult has only read 6 of the top 100 books they've printed. Well let's see.

1) Look at the list and bold those you have read.
2) Italicize those you intend to read.
3) Underline the books you LOVE.
4) Reprint this list in your own LJ so we can try and track down these people who've read 6 and force books upon them ;-)

I've a strange taste )

It's torture to be at work when you have a really, really thrilling book waiting for you at home.

The book I'm referring to, is Icelandic and by an author called Arnaldur Indriðason (a good deal of his stuff has been translated into other languages, including English, as he write crime novels). His newest book, Konungsbók, (I wonder if the title will be Codex Regius in the English translation) is ... I was going to say Da-Vinci Code-esque but the main characters' relationship and the subject matter reminds me a little bit of Name of the Rose. It doesn't have as good style (nowhere near it) and a lot less Latin and fewer monks but I can't help but be reminded.

So yeah, I want to go home now!
